Windhoek Presentation - 26 June 2013

The Desert Lion Conservation presentation and fundraising event was planned, organised and hosted by TOSCO (Felix Vallat & Barbara Wayrauch), Bernd & Conny Kebbel, Heiko & Anja Denker and Peter Sander.

The event was held at the Sport Klub Windhoek and was an enormous success with approximately 650 people in attendance.

Numerous sponsors made this possible:

TOSCO – venue (N$1,000), postcards (N$1,500), Veuve Cliquot.
Off-Road Centre – 150 caps (N$9,500).
Photo prints – Studio 77, WWF, NEWS, Twyfelfontein Lodge, Optic Exclusive, Anja Denker & 1 anonymous.
SKW – reduced price for venue.
Sven & Jens Schonecke (InTouch)– audio visual equipment.
Additional sponsors – Safari Court, Namboer CC, LOGO Embroidery.

The event was planned for a possible attendance of 300 people. Shortly before the start of the event, the General Manager of SKW, Mr Rudiger Reichstein, added an additional 280 chairs.

An attendance of approximately 650 people surprised everyone as the hall filled up and many people had to stand along the walls.

Mr Douglas Reissner hosted the proceedings for the evening and Mr Kenneth Uiseb from the Ministry of Environment & Tourism gave the opening remarks.

Mr Bertus Tjipombo, a Lion Officer from the Purros Conservancy, also attended the evening (courtesy of TOSCO). The Desert Lion presentation focussed on several topical issues, such as tourism, trophy hunting and Human Wildlife Conflict, and this was followed by a question/answer session. The evening ended with an auction of 8 photographs (of lions in the desert habitat) and a 3-day trip with the Project.

The presentation on the Desert Lion Project appeared to have been well received – it was certainly well attended. The fundraising initiatives, which were driven by the organisers, were enormously successful. The sales of Desert Lion caps, general donations and the auction (N$100,000) raised an amount of N$ 179,012 for the Desert Lion Conservation project. The organisers, sponsors and everybody that attended the event are thanked for their support.

Desert Lion caps can be requested from the contacts listed below. The caps are uniquely numbered and they are available for a donation of > N$ 500.
