Alpha, Bravo and Charly starring in award-winning film “Lions of the Skeleton Coast”
When Desert lion cubs Alpha, Bravo and Charly were born in November 2015, no one could have ever thought they would one day become the most phenomenal storytellers of all time.
When they lost their mother at ten months old, The Desert Lion Trust had little hope for their future. While Philip closely monitored the orphaned cubs, he was once again joined by wildlife filmmakers Will & Lianne Steenkamp, who had previously made “Vanishing Kings – Lions of the Namib”.
The first part of the orphans’ story was told in “Vanishing Kings II – Desert Lion Legacy”, but that was only the beginning of what became their most remarkable journey of survival. Now their full story will be brought to audiences worldwide in the Steenkamps’ final film “Lions of the Skeleton Coast”.

Lions of the Skeleton Coast” is receiving major recognition at wildlife film festivals worldwide. At the prestigious Jackson Wild film festival in the USA the film won awards for Animal Behaviour and Writing. And last night at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV awards in France it took four trophies, for “Best Nature & Wildlife”, “Best Environment, Ecology & Sustainability”, “Best Cinematography”, and “Best of Festival” – The Grand Prix…!
The Desert Lion Trust is incredibly proud to have worked alongside Will & Lianne on this very unique project that took eight years of filming. Their dedication to the Desert lions shines through in the way they’ve portrayed and interwoven long-term dedicated science with a remarkable coming of age story in a most compelling and authentic narrative…
Namibia can be very proud of such a documentary which highlights its invaluable natural heritage, and The Desert Lion Trust would therefore like to thank MEFT and all other parties and organisations involved in making this documentary a reality. Namibia’s coastal lionesses have rewritten history and thanks to a film like “Lions of the Skeleton Coast” we are able to raise more awareness and greatly improve conservation efforts for the Desert lions.
