Movements and activities during lockdown
Friday 24 April 2020
Movements and activities of the Project have been severely limited by both the lockdown restrictions that was expanded to the whole of Namibia in mid-April, as well as extensive rainfall that resulted in flooding of some ephemeral rivers. Although the research and the implementation of the Human-lion conflict management policy have been regarded as an essential service, we still await the required documentation and movements have therefore been limited to the Skeleton Coast National Park.
Flash floods of the Hoanib River reached the Floodplain and with the absence of tourism activities the roads are showing signs of recovery. The resident lions have been frequenting the Floodplain and along the coast.
In the southern section of the study areas the resident lions have been moving extensively in search of prey and have spent time in the Ugab / Brandberg area.
Images captured by camera-traps include interesting records for the Hoanib Floodplain area.
A camera mounted at a spring close to the ocean in the central area recorded several surprises, including a lioness with two cubs and a leopard.
