Highly Needed Lion Tracking Collars
In recent years, the population of desert lions in the Skeleton Coast region of Namibia has unfortunately been decreasing. The primary threat to these lions remains human-wildlife conflict. Local communities, still fearing the lions, often resort to killing them when they come too close.
To minimize these conflicts, various warning systems have been implemented. These systems notify local communities when a lion is approaching, giving them time to protect their livestock. For this program to be successful, all lions need to be equipped with specialized collars designed for this purpose.
Specifically designed live satellite lion collars provide researchers and rapid response teams with valuable insights into the movements and behavior of the lions. In addition to activating the early warning system when lions approach local communities (as traditional collars do), these satellite collars enable continuous live tracking, allowing researchers to monitor the lions’ movements in real time. This capability helps researchers predict movements and warn rapid response teams before a lion even reaches human settlements.
